Lake Superior’s maritime history is legendary. From the Edmund Fitzgerald to the ore boats, Duluth and its people have shared in the lake’s long history. As a part of a new highway construction project, a mural was incorporated into a highway retaining wall to capture the stories and life of the great lake. Thirty-seven different images were produced from 1,290,000 pieces of tile. In order to streamline the assembly of the project, the tiles were affixed to 5,608 12” x 12” panels. Grazzini tile setters meticulously assembled the panels bringing the images to life. The mural not only had to be beautiful, it had to be durable. Because of the extreme weather conditions, the mural had to be constructed to withstand temperatures ranging from -40 degrees F to +100 degrees F. |
